Yoga and Effective Home Remedies for Jaundice

When your skin color becomes slightly yellowish, you could be having jaundice. The body fluids also turn yellow in Jaundice.

The body becomes yellow because the bilirubin levels increase in the body. The bilirubin is a waste material produced after breaking down of hemoglobin in the liver. Neonatal jaundice is quite common in infants. However, it can happen to people of any age and is a result of an underlying condition. The jaundice mainly deals with problems with the bile duct or the liver or both.  This is why the bilirubin levels increase in the body giving a yellow tinge to the skin.

Jaundice is mainly identified the yellow coloration of the skin. There is some problems with the liver or bile duct that lead to this.

Here are a list of 23 possible causes of jaundice:

Hepatitis:

Hepatitis is a condition which involves inflammation of the liver due to infection, autoimmune diseases, blood loss and certain drugs etc.

This indeed leads to obstruction of liver function which leads to jaundice.

Newborn jaundice:

About 60% infants in America suffer from neonatal jaundice. This condition occurs if the baby has high levels of bilirubin in the body. THis jaundice goes away as the liver of the baby develops.

Breast milk jaundice:

This occurs within 1 week of birth in infants and it is related to breastfeeding. This cause  causes yellow discoloration, fatigue, high pitched crying and poor weight gain.

Thalassemia:

This condition is inherited and causes abnormal formation of hemoglobin in the blood. In this disease the red blood cells get destructed and increase the amount of bilirubin in the body.

Moreover, it also causes anemia.

Pancreatic cancer

Hepatitis B:

This is liver inflammation due to due to hepatitis B virus.

Hepatitis C and hepatitis E

Liver infection by hepatitis C and E virus respectively. Contamination in food and water is responsible for causing hepatitis infections which leads to jaundice.

Alcoholic liver disease

Gallstones:

Gallstones form when there is increase in concentration of bile and causes it.

Cirrhosis of liver

Bile duct obstruction:

This is an emergency situation that causes liver injury and inflammation and liver damage.

Sickle cell anemia:

The red blood cells become sickle celled and get destructed faster in the liver. This causes anemia and this leads to it due to increase in the bilirubin.

Liver cancer

Acute pancreatitis:

This condition is caused due to gallstones and alcohol. In this condition the pancreas swell and is one of the underlying cause of jaundice.

Other causes:

  • Drug induced hemolytic anemia.
  • ABO incompatibility reaction
  • Idiopathic autoimmune hemolytic anemia
  • Yellow fever
  • Weil's disease

Symptoms of Jaundice:

You can know if you are suffering from jaundice if you have yellow coloration of skin and whites of the eyes. Other symptoms of jaundice also include vomiting, fever, dark urine, pale stools and extreme fatigue.

It usually indicates that there is some underlying medical condition in the body. In this condition caused to thalassemia or hemolytic jaundice, anemia is very common. Weakness, fatigue and fever along with yellow skin and eyes are some common symptoms of jaundice.

Sometimes, people misdiagnose jaundice when they have elbow skin. However, you are suffering from it if you have both yellow skin and yellow eyes.

Yellow skin can also be a cause of increase in beta carotene intake in the body. Beta-carotene is found in capsicum, carrots etc. and is a precursor to vitamin A.

Types of jaundice:

There are three major types of jaundice as given below:

Hepatocellular jaundice:

This occurs if there is injury to the liver or if you are suffering from liver disease.

Hemolytic jaundice:

In this condition the rate of destruction of RBCs increase in the body causing increasing in hemoglobin breakdown. This indeed causes increase in the levels of bilirubin in the body.

Obstructive jaundice:

When the bile gets obstructed due to gall stones, it leads to accumulation of bilirubin in the liver. This results in jaundice.

Sunlight for Jaundice:

Sunlight is a major source of vitamin D. Phototherapy or sunlight is used to get rid of it in newborn babies. Generally phototherapy is used for this purpose. However, sunlight showed 6.5 times more effectiveness in its treatment in infants.

Sugarcane Juice for Jaundice:

Fresh sugarcane juice is rich in minerals and vitamins. It also has action against swelling and redness, high blood sugar levels, pain. Moreover, sugarcane juice has hepatoprotective properties. Thus sugarcane juice helps in treating this condition.

You can have sugarcane juice daily. Apart from treating jaundice it is also good for the abdominal pain and other ailments of the body.

Rosemary oil for jaundice:

Rosemary oil is great for jaundice. It has liver protecting properties. Rosemary oil also helps in reducing the toxins in the body.

Take 12 drops of rosemary oil and mix it with carrier oil up to 30 ml. Massage the abdominal area with this oil for relief from this condition.

You can do this remedy once a day and you will see improvement in symptoms of jaundice.

Lemon oil:

Lemon oil is great protective for liver nd it also has action against liver injuries. This makes lemon oil effective against this condition.

How to use lemon oil?

Take 12 drops and add them to 30 ml carrier oil. Then massage your abdomen and liver area with this oil for some time. This will give you relief from it and its symptoms.

Goat Milk:

Goat milk contains vital nutrients and helps in treating jaundice in babies as well. You can have goat milk at least one glass daily for improvement in the condition. The goat milk has power to fight against the liver infections. Hence, it is great for  treatment.

Grapes are great for their antioxidants and fiber. This helps in digestion and also in the treatment of jaundice. he grapes contain liver friendly nutrients that help to treat it.

Take one cup of green grapes and make juice out of it. Drink this juice of green grapes daily. Also good for infants that have it.

Garlic:

Garlic is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces the toxicity in the liver and also speeds the recovery.

Take at least 3-4 cloves of garlic everyday in your diet daily. You can add garlic as a seasoning in the salads and sauces etc.

Ginger: 

Ginger is a go to remedy for many diseases. It helps in treating the infections of the liver and it has fat reducing properties.

Take 1-2 inch of ginger and grate it. Add this to one cup f water and boil in the saucepan. You can add 1-2tablespoon of honey for taste if you want.

You can include ginger in baking goods.

Lemon juice is great for unblocking bile ducts and has great antioxidant property. It helps in treating liver damage and protects the liver.

Take 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tbsp. of honey and add it to one cup of water. Drink this lemon water daily for obstructive jaundice.

Yogurt:

Yogurt is filled with probiotics. They helps in lowering bilirubin levels and regulate the bacterial colonies in the body. Thus it helps in treating it. Breast-feeding women can increase the intake of probiotics to decrease the jaundice related to breast feeding.

Bhastrika pranayama:

In this type of yoga, we control the breathing to improve the health of the lungs. This pranayama involves forced breathing. You can do Bhastrika pranayama in the following way:

Seat in a lotus pose and close your eyes. Then inhale forcefully and with equal force exhale. Practice this for some time until you feel tired. This helps in strengthening the lung muscles and improves allergic asthma.

You should practice this yoga pose in the morning in fresh air.

Kapaalbhati :

In this ,you have inhale regularly but exhalations should be forceful. This is known to clear nasal passages and remove 80% of the toxins as you exhale.

Anulom Vilom Pranayama:

In this breathing exercise of Anulom vilom, take air in from left nostril and block the other nostril by using a finger. Then exhale air from the right nostril. Take in air from the right and exhale through the left nostril. This is known as Anulom vilom .

It provides relaxing effect and brings down the body temperature. This simple breathing exercise will clear the nasal pathway and clean your respiratory system.

Frog pose: 

Mandukasan literally means “frog pose”.

Method:

It involves kneeling on the ground such that the toes touch the buttocks.
Place your hands on the lower stomach and bend down such that your nose touches the knees.

Half Spinal Twist Pose: 

This pose helps in detoxification of the body. It also improves the circulation to the digestive tract, hence aiding its function in body. Stretches the neck muscles and brings relief.

Steps:

Sit on the floor with legs straight in front of you. Then gradually bend the left knee and bring the right leg closer to the pelvic region just as cross legged position. Bend your right knee and keep your right feet over the left knee. Now, bring your left arm across your right knee in such a way that there is a twist in the spine.

Stay in this position for some time and then come back to the original position.

Gas release pose:

It is called knees to chest pose. It releases excess pressure and gas associated with stomach discomfort. As the name suggests it is very easy pose.

Steps:

Lie down on your back and inhale as you take your knees up to your chest.

Your back should be flat on the floor in this pose. Be in this hugging position for 5 mins. Exhale slowly as you bring your knees back to the original position.
