A normal adult human being has 4 chains of polypeptides in the hemoglobin viz., 2 alpha chains and 2 beta chains. However, in fetuses, the beta chain is not present and there is occurrence of two gamma chains instead.

The iron in the hemoglobin gives it it's distinct red color.

So, in short hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen to the other parts of the body and so it is very important. Hemoglobin also influences the donut shape of the RBC.

Hemoglobin is one of the very important test and is measured along with CBC or complete blood count test.

There are various methods used to measure hemoglobin in the body. The measure of hemoglobin values gives a direct relation to the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. You can get your blood test done for hemoglobin in any pathological lab. It is a very easy and cheap test.

Normal hemoglobin values:

These values vary with the age and gender of the person.

Normal hemoglobin values are:

  • Newborn: 17 to 22 gm/dL
  • One month of age: 11 to 15gm/dL
  • Children: 11 to 13 gm/dL
  • adult males: 14-18gm/dL
  • Adult females: 12-16gm/ dL
  • Middle age men and older: 12.4-14.9 gm/dL
  • Middle age women and older: 11.7-13.8 gm/dL
  • Pregnant women should have medium range of hemoglobin as high hemoglobin will result in still births and premature births are observed when the hemoglobin is lower than the normal value.

Causes of change in hemoglobin values:

Causes of High hemoglobin:

  • Lung diseases
  • Tumor growth
  • Bone marrow disorder
  • Drug abuse of erythropoietin. Athletes take this drug for increasing the oxygen capacity of the body.

Causes of low hemoglobin:

  • loss of blood during an accident.
  • Colon cancer, stomach ulcer
  • Bone marrow disorder
  • Kidney failure
  • Sickle cell anemia and thalassemia

Symptoms of low levels of hemoglobin:

You can determine if you have low hemoglobin if:

  • you breath fast
  • irregular heartbeat
  • weakness
  • muscle weakness and feeling tired all the time
  • frequent bruising with no explanation
  • headaches that are very often.

Home remedies to increase hemoglobin:

You can increase the hemoglobin if you take the following supplements:

As we have seen above, the most important part of the hemoglobin is its iron content. Moreover, when you eat iron rich foods the hemoglobin levels increase in the body. Decrease in iron rich food leads to iron deficiency anemia.

  • beef
  • spinach
  • peanuts
  • rice
  • black eyed peas
  • kidney beans
  • avocados

The vitamin, C helps in increasing the amount of iron in the body by increasing the absorption of iron.

Vitamin C helps in increasing the absorption of iron in the body. Here are some of the foods rich in vitamin C which increase the absorption of iron from the body:

Vitamin A is also great in increasing iron in the body. Here are some foods that contain vitamin A are:

If you are severely anemic, then your doctor advises you to take iron supplements. However, the dose varies from person to person considering their age and severity of anemia.

Increase in iron consumption leads to some dangerous side effects such as:

  • hemochromatosis: it causes the symptoms such as cancer, irregular heartbeat and liver damage
  • constipation
  • nausea and vomiting.

Supplements contain iron which increases the amount of iron in the body. This leads to increase in the hemoglobin levels in the body. You are advised to take these iron supplements for almost 2-3 months or may be for some weeks.

Yoga for anemia or to increase hemoglobin:

Yoga is great for increasing the blood flow. Apart from that, yoga involves breathing exercises by which there is an oxygen surge in the body. If you practice yoga everyday then you will notice your hemoglobin levels increase gradually.

Here are some yoga poses great for increasing hemoglobin:

Seated forward bend pose to increase hemoglobin: *img

It stretches your spine and helps release the gases. It brings pressure on the abdominal area. Hence, relieves stomach ache.

You can do this pose in the following way:

Sit on the floor with your back straight and legs straight ahead of you. Then bend forward so that your nose touches the knees. Stay in the seated forward pose for 5 mins.

Sarvangasana to increase hemoglobin: *img

It improves the blood supply to the thyroid are and relieves pain associated with piles.

Steps todo this pose:

Lie down on the floor, then gradually lift your lower abdomen and chest. Give support to your lower abdomen  with the help of your palms. Let the body be straight up and don't bend the knees.

Standing forward bend pose:

This pose calms down your nerves. This yoga pose calms you down .It stretches the muscles of the arms and hamstrings.

Steps:

Stand upright. Then take a deep breath and bend down. Bend down in such a way that your palms are flat on the ground . Keep this position for as long as you can and slowly exhale as you come back to standing upright.

This pose is best for beginners. This is because it is very easy to do and you can do this with low flexibility too.

How to do this pose?

Stand straight with feet slightly wide apart. Then bend down sideways in such a way that your hands touch the toes of the feet. It may not touch in the beginning but as you practice more you will notice increase in flexibility.

However, it is important to stretch the muscles. Practice this pose for 5-10 mins for relief.

It is very easy and should be done after all the yoga.

Just lie down quietly. Remove all the bondages such as belts, watch etc. Lie on your back with feet slightly apart. Be in this position for 20 mins.
