Leprosy is a bacterial infection of the skin. It is caused by the bacteria called as the Mycobacterium leprae.

Leprosy causes damage of the nerves and disfigures the skin of arms and legs mainly. This condition is not as contagious. This is because, you can only get leprosy if you come in constant contact with the mouth and droplets of an infected person. Moreover, it is very common. It has infected about 208,000 people around the world and every continent has had patients.

Leprosy is not easily spread and about 95% people infected did not develop this disease. However, once infected there  is loss of sensation in the nerves. moreover, the legs and arms or the parts affected with this should be amputed.

Leprosy is common in poor people. There are two types of infections. If it is paucibacillary, there are only five patches on the body. However, if it is multibacillary, the number of patches are more and there is numbness in the limbs.

Symptoms of leprosy:

The symptoms of leprosy are different in different types of people. The incubation period of the bacterium is about 5 years. So, you may develop symptoms from 1 years up to 20 years after the infection is spread in your body.

The disease starts with lesions on the skin and gradually develops to numbness and loss of sensation in limbs.

Here are some common symptoms of leprosy that every infected person experiences:

  • In worse conditions, tissue damage which leads to shortening of  fingers and toes. It also affects the cartilage and it gets absorbed inside the body.

Around 30% people who are infected with leprosy experience numbness. The damage of nerve causes numbness which leads to further infections, ulcerations and joint deformities.
