We all have got throat pain at least once in our life. The throat becomes sore and it results in throat pain. Throat pain is accompanied by scratchy feeling and dryness in the throat. It is one of the most common and initial symptoms of many diseases.

Sore throats leading to throat pain are generally caused due to environmental factors like dry air or infections.

There are three types of sore throat and they are divided on the basis of the area of throat they affect.

The types of sore throat are:


The pharynx is area present right behind your mouth. In this condition, there is infections of the pharynx. Hence the name pharyngitis.

In this condition, the tonsils become inflamed and they swell. These are the soft tissues present in the back of the mouth.

The voice box known as the larynx swells and causes sore throat.

Symptoms of Sore Throat:

The symptoms of sore throat differ on the basis of the infection and its intensity. However, here are some symptoms of sore throat you can feel in the throat alongside throat pain:

  • Scratchy feeling in the throat
  • Burning sensation
  • Raw throat
  • dryness and unable to quench thirst
  • Tender
  • Irritation.
  • Trouble while swallowing.
  • Not able to talk properly
  • Alongside these symptoms and throat pain, you may observe some other symptoms too. They are:
  • Nasal congestion: the nostrils become blocked
  • Runny nose
  • sneezing
  • cough
  • fever and chills
  • Hoarseness in voice

Moreover, you may also observe other kinds of pain like head ache, body pain and even appetite loss.

Causes of Sore Throat:

The causes of throat pain vary from infectious diseases to throat injuries.

Causes of sore throat

Cold and flu:

The majority of sore throats are caused due to viral infections (about 90%). The viruses that cause throat pain are:

  • Common cold
  • Influenzas flu
  • Mononucleosis: Infections that is transferred through saliva lead to  throat pain.
  • Measles is a  disease that causes rashes lead to throat pain
  • Chicken pox: Itchy and bumpy rash that also causes throat pain
  • Mumps: it is an infections that causes salivary glands to swell. This leads to sore throat too.

 Bacterial infections:

Bacteria are also responsible for causing sore throats. The most common  throat infection is strep throat. It is caused by A. streptococcus bacteria that leads to throat pain. It is common in children and affects the throat and tonsils.

Bacterial infections like chlamydia  are also responsible and they are transmitted through sexual contact.


Allergy basically means that immune system is highly sensitive to some substances. When you get allergy, the nose gets congested, you start sneezing and you may also notice throat irritation.

The mucus produced in allergy drips down from the throat and causes irritation to the throat.

Dry air:

Change in the humidity of air also affects sore throat. This is because dry air sucks out the moisture inside the throat and leaves it feeling dry and itchy. This is most likely reason for sore throat especially in the winters.

Smoke, Gases and Chemical irritants:

There are various different materials in the environment that cause irritation to the throat. These substances are:

Cigarette smoke

excess air pollution can cause irritation to the throat.

Fragrances of cleaning products and other chemicals.

Injury to the Throat:

Throat can  get injured if there is any nicks or cuts to the throat from the inside. It can also get irritated if a piece of gets stuck inside the throat leading to injury.

Repeated use of vocal cords leads to injury to the muscles in the throat. This can contribute to throat pain and sore throat

GERD ( Gastro-esophageal reflux disease)

In this condition, the acid from the stomach jumps back into the esophagus and it causes injury. The acid in the stomach is very strong and causes injury to the throat.


This is the rarest cause of throat pain. There is tumor growth in the voice box or on the parts of throat that leads to sore throat.

Honey tea for sore Throat:

Honey provides soothing effect to the throat. Researches studied honey along with dextromethorphan for relieving throat pain. It was found that it relieved pain and provided relief. In children also honey showed good results . Parents prefer honey first as compared to other medications.

Honey can be taken along with turmeric. In warm water or herbal tea dissolve 2 tablespoon of honey.

Ginger for sore throat:

In ancient Indian medicine throat pain was treated with Ginger tea. Ginger has anti-inflammatory property and eases throat pain .

One study showed that Ginger relieved cough by relaxing the cell membranes . Researchers have not yet done these studies in humans. However, in ancient India a concoction of ginger was given for sore throat relief.

To prepare ginger tea , take 2 tsps. of grated ginger and add it to one cup of boiling water. Boil for some time and have this concoction twice or thrice daily.

Staying hydrated:

Researchers have said  that having water at room temperature benefit in relieving throat pain and flu like symptoms.

Staying hydrated will help relieve some cough . You should also  drink hot water throughout the day. You should have hot beverages.

Some hot beverages are:

  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • herbal tea
  • clear soup

Steam for sore throat:

Steam relieves wet cough. Wet cough produces a lot of phlegm and mucus. Take a warm bath and let the steam fill the room. stay in the steam until symptoms go away .

You can also have steam with a vaporizer. Fill the vaporizer with water and some herbs such as basil, eucalyptus and rosemary and take steam. It is best remedy for sore throat . It also clears decongestion. Lean over the bowl and breathe in the vapor for 5 minutes and not more than 15minutes . After this drink a glass of room temperature water to prevent dehydration.

Marshmallow root for sore throat :

Marshmallow root is used in treatment of cough and sore throat from ancient times. This root has a lot of mucilage. mucilage is a thick ,gluey substance. It coats the throat. Moreover , it provides ease from irritation and coughing.

Marshmallow root is available as dried powder or tea bag. Add this marshmallow root to hot water and let it cool down to room temperature. The mucilage seeps out of the root into the water. drink this for sore throat relief.

Saltwater gargle for sore throat:

Saltwater gargle helps in relieving wet cough and sore throat. Moreover, it also reduces the mucus that forms behind the throat .

Take 1-2 tablespoon of salt in warm water and gargle every night until symptoms disappear. It is a very easy and efficient natural home remedies for throat pain relief.

Pineapples for sore Throat:

Pineapple is very effective home remedy for sore throat. Pineapple contains bromelain compound . This compound is present in more amount in the core of the fruit.

Bromelain has mucolytic property and anti inflammatory property. Hence , when you have cough or other mucus related problems , you should drink pineapple juice. It is best home remedy for throat pain.

Bromelain is also available as nutritional supplement. However, you should consult your doctor before taking any of these supplements.


Thyme is very effective for cough, throat pain and bronchitis. Moreover it also has anti oxidant property. You can make thyme tea by adding 2 tsp of dried thyme to a cup of warm water. Wait for 10 mins, strain and drink.

It is one of the best natural home remedy for  throat pain.

Acid reflux:

Acid reflux is one the most common reason of throat pain. acid reflux occurs when some acid from the stomach enters the esophagus and irritates it is known as reflux. This type of cough can be prevented by omitting food which causes acidity. Food and drinks that activates acid reflux are_

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Oily food
  • Garlic and onions
  • Tomatoes preparations.


Turmeric produces a lot of mucus and expels out the viral and bacterial particles. Moreover, it also relieves sore throat symptoms. It is antiviral and antibacterial in action. It soothes  the throat from inflammation.

Turmeric can be taken along with hot milk. Add 2 tsp of turmeric powder to milk and boil it for some time. Drink this turmeric milk for relief from cough. Turmeric is found in Indian households , it is the best home remedy for sore throat.


Probiotics do not directly treat cough but they help in boosting the immune system. They increase the intestinal flora and improve immune system because good bacteria increases. Thus, our body is able to fight these minor infections which cause sore throat and throat pain .

Probiotics ae available in the market. However , some easily available probiotics at home are :

  • Curd or yoghurt
  • Kimchi
  • Miso soup 
  • Sauerkraut .


Licorice is an ancient herb used in India for ages to treat throat ailments. It has a number of benefits in sore throat. For example, it eases inflammation and congestion in the throat. You can use licorice to gargle or make licorice tea.

How to make licorice tea?

Take one rhizome of licorice herb and seep it in hot water for at least 30 mins. Drink this hot tea to get rid of sore throat.


Include garlic in your everyday diet. Especially in salads use raw garlic as a flavoring agent. The garlic has allicin which has anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing the soreness of the throat. Hence, use garlic to get rid of  throat pain.

Apple cider vinegar:

Vinegar is acidic in nature, this means that it helps to kill the bacteria in the throat. Moreover, apple cider vinegar coats the layer of the throat and helps fight away sore throat.
