 Dizziness is a condition in which you feel weak, woozy and unstable and you may loose balance. When you feel like the surrounding is spinning around you it is known as Vertigo. You may notice these conditions anytime during the day and may make you feel weak and loose your balance.

If you want to understand Dizziness, then you should know that, many parts of your body are responsible to maintain balance. They include the eyes, brain, inner ear and feet and the nerves supplying them. When these symptoms go out of balance then you might notice a loss of balance, lightheadedness and be a little faint.

If you are noticing the room moving and spinning around you then you might be having vertigo. This is the most classic sign of vertigo and it gets worse when you move your head. Vertigo occurs when there is problem with your inner ear and the brainstem.

Many adults are suffering from this condition and they visit the doctors for the same. If you have dizziness often or frequently in a day, then it may affect your life significantly. However, it rarely signals for any major underlying medical conditions.

False sense of spinning of your surroundings

Fainting or lightheadedness

Floating sensation

Nausea

Sometimes you can have dizziness, headache, nausea all together. In this condition you might feel like passing out or fainting condition. You might also loose your balance and fall and faint.

Dizziness is mostly not as serious as it sounds and rarely indicates any medical condition. However, there are some very severe symptoms accompanying dizziness which may require immediate medical attention.

Seek medical attention immediately if you notice these symptoms with dizziness:

  • Sever pain in the head
  • Pain in the chest
  • Heavy breathing and difficulty in breathing
  • Paralysis accompanied by numbing of arms and legs
  • passing out
  • Not able to see clearly. You may experience double vision
  • Rapid beating of the heart
  • Confusion and foggy thinking
  • Vomiting along with other symptoms
  • Change in hearing or unclear hearing
  • Numbing in the facial region.
  • If you notice these symptoms then it might mean some different ailment is associated with dizziness.

Causes of Dizziness:

As discussed before, Dizziness is associated with the balance of the body. The balance of the body is maintained by the inner ear and the brainstem. Therefore, if you are suffering from any inner ear issues then you might loose balance and feel lightheaded and dizzy.

Inner ear issues:

The ears are very important for determining the spatial position of the body. The inner ear and eyes and brainstem work in co-ordination with each other to give a sense of position and balance of the body. When the inner ear is damaged then, there is disturbance with the co-ordination of the eyes and brainstem. This results in feeling that the surrounding is spinning around you. This is also known as Vertigo which is a type of dizziness.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo:

In this condition you feel like the surrounding is moving around you. This vertigo like condition is triggered by events such as rapid head movement, such as when you suddenly sit up. You notice a  blow in your head which makes you feel dizzy.

Infection:

Ear infection is very common. However, you will notice vertigo like condition if your inner ear is infected. The infection affects the vestibular nerve and causes sudden and constant vertigo. You may also experience hearing loss.

Meniere's disease:

There is excessive fluid in the ear in this disease. This produces vertigo for several hours. This can also worsen to inability in hearing, tinnitus and feeling of plugged ear.

Migraine :

If you have migraine then you are prone to having vertigo.

Circulation problems that lead to dizziness:

Sudden drop in blood pressure:

There is could be a sudden drop in the blood pressure in vertigo. IT may because of standing up very quickly. Due to this  the blood pressure decreases for that instance. However, it comes back to normal. This is known as Orthostatic Hypertension.

Improper blood circulation:

If you are a heart patient and are suffering from or suffered from cardiac myopathy, arrhythmia, heart attack etc. Then you are prone to be having vertigo and dizziness due to not enough flow to your brain and ear.

Other causes of dizziness include:

  • Parkinson' s disease or other neurological disorder
  • Anti-depressants, anti-seizure drugs and other CNS drugs
  • Anxiety
  • Anemia or low iron levels in the body.
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Dehydration and overheating of the body.

As we have looked at the causes, one of it says to dehydration and overheating. Hence, if you are out in the sun or working continuously with having enough water intake you might have dizziness. So, whenever, you have dizziness just sip on a glass of cool, fresh water. This will stabilize and soothe your body and make you feel better.

Epley Maneuver: *img

It is a very effective remedy for dizziness and is proven strategy for vertigo. It is very effective against BPPV as per certain studies.

The procedure involves the following steps:

Sit upright with pillow to support your back and legs stretched straight. Then turn your head at 45 degrees right and keep it in slanted position. Then turn to the left at 90 degrees without moving the neck.

The turn head and the entire body to the right side without lifting the neck and stay for 30 seconds. Lok downwards while doing so. Then sit up gently and relax.

If the vertigo starts at the right side from the right ear then just reverse the directions.

Ginger tea: *img

According studies ginger tea is very effective in treating the symptoms of vertigo. It is said to be better than the physical repositioning technique.

You can have ginger as tea: Grate 1 inch of ginger and add it to a glass of boiling water. Let it boil for 10 mins. Sip on this tea to fight Dizziness.

Almonds: *img

Almonds are an essential source of vitamin E, B, A , proteins and fatty acids.  It is proven to improve brain function, hence very effective in dizziness and vertigo. You can also massage your head with almond oil to get rid of the symptoms.

Essential oils : *img

Essential oils are great for treating dizziness, nausea, headache. These oils include peppermint, ginger, lavender, and other essential oils. They show their effects when inhaled. You can use an infuser or massage it on the chest, neck , back and temples by mixing with some carrier oils.

Gingko biloba: *img

Gingko is a herb which is extensively used in Chinese and Indian medicine to relieve the symptoms of Vertigo. It works by increasing the blood supply to the brain. Thus  helps in decreasing the symptoms of dizziness.

Yoga for dizziness:

Corpse is very relaxing pose and relieves any tension and stress in the body. If you are suffering from Dizziness, then this pose is very effective.

Steps:

Lie on the back on he floor. Remove any unnecessary bondages such as belts, watch, hairband etc.   Keep your head in such a position that your neck muscles are relaxed and keep your legs slightly wide.

Stay in corpse pose for 20 mins.

Pranayama: *img

Pranayama is associated with controlling the breathing in such a way that the body stays in balance. You can practice pranayama in the following way:

  • Sit with your back straight and close your right nostril with one finger.
  • Inhale from the left nostril and then close the left nostril and exhale from the right.
  • Then inhale from the right nostril keeping the left closed and exhale from the left by opening left nostril
  • Repeat this for at least 10mins.

It helps in establishing balance in the body.

Seated forward bend pose: *img

In this pose sit straight with legs stretched out on the floor. Gradually bend down in such a way that the nose touches the knees. The hold your toes with your fingers. It may be very difficult at first but gradually you can develop flexibility.

Shanmukhi mudra: *img

It is a very easy pose and helps relieve dizziness.

Steps:

Sit straight with your back erect. Then bring your elbows at the shoulder level and place your thumbs on the ear. Place your index fingers on your eyes, middle fingers over your nostril and ring and small finger encircling the lip area. Inhale and exhale by open your nostril with middle finger. Concentrate on your breath in this position.
