 Hair loss is also known as 'alopecia' in worse cases. It can affect anywhere in your body and it could be permanent in some people too. However, hair loss is of major concern when it causes baldness. This hair loss does not happen due to one reason. It can occur due to heredity, hormonal conditions, medical conditions or aging.

Baldness is more common in older men as compared to older women. However, baldness is extreme case of excessive hair loss. Generally, women suffer from hair loss which is seasonal or due to hormonal changes.

Hair loss causes thinning of your hair and the thickness reduces with time. In men, mostly they go untreated and unhidden when it comes to falling out of hair. However, most women are concerned and they might apply makeup or external supplements to hide the patches of hair. Hair loss becomes a major hindrance when we want to try different hairstyles.

But worry no more, this article focuses on causes and home remedies that will stop hair loss and improve the health of your hair.

Causes of hair loss:

Humans lose 50-100 hair per day. This is a very little amount and goes unnoticed as there are continuously new hair growing on the scalp. So, hair loss occurs when you lose more hair than you can grow.

These are some of the common reasons for hair loss:

Heredity:

If your parents are prone to hair loss you may also develop loss of hair in the future. This is known as androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. There is hair loss and bald spots and patches are developed. The hair line recedes and the baldness is visible.

This is a genetic condition so it is necessary that you take treatment for baldness as soon as possible from a dermatologist.

Hormonal changes and medical issues:

The hormones are important to balance the physiological functions of the body. When there is imbalance in the hormones in the body, the functions in the body gets disturbed. There is imbalance in hormones in conditions such as pregnancy or postpartum hair loss, menopause, thyroid etc.

There are some medical conditions that cause baldness and patches of hair. Alopecia is one of them. In alopecia the immune cells get a false alarm. Hence, they start attacking the hair follicles. This causes patchy hair.

Other medical conditions include scalp infection and ringworm infection. Trichotillomania, is a disorder in which the person has a urge to pull out hair from his body.

Medicines:

There are some medicines used in chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis, heart conditions, gout which cause receding of the hair line.

Radiation:

When your exposed to radiation therapy , especially in cancer the hair is lost. However, in such a condition the hair rarely grows back on the patch.

Stress:

As we are a progressing in becoming modern society, we are suffering from a lot of stress and anxiety. Work pressures and depression can also cause hair fall. This type of hair fall  is temporary.

Hair treatments:

Hair treatments are done using a lot of chemicals and heat. It damages the texture of hair and you may have excessive product buildup on the scalp. This causes hair to fall out eventually. It can be treated by scalp treatments and switching to natural therapies.

These are some of the major causes of hair loss experienced by people. They can be managed by consulting a dermatologist.

Most of the above causes can be treated by including some of these easy and home remedies for hair loss.

Home remedies for hair loss :

Here are some effective home remedies for hair loss which are easily available in the kitchen and they are very effective.

Coconut milk for hair loss:

Coconut milk is one of  the most effective remedies for treating hair loss.

It nourishes the follicles and increases hair growth. It contains potassium, iron and fats. You can apply the milk of coconut directly in the scalp. Keep the mask of coconut milk on overnight and rinse it off in the morning.

Note: make fresh coconut milk at home. Avoid purchasing coconut milk as it contains a lot of preservatives that may not be good for the health of your hair.

Apple cider vinegar for hair loss:

Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid. Hence, it is acidic in nature. It balances the pH of the scalp. This improves  the health of the scalp and facilitates new hair to grow . It also conditions the hair, making it soft, shiny and lustrous.

You can use apple cider vinegar in this way by following these steps:

Take 1-2 tbsp. of ACV and add it to a mug of water. Use diluted mixture as the acid is very strong for the scalp. Wah your hair with sulphate free mild shampoo and rinse it thoroughly. Then pour the diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar and rinse your hair with water.

When  the hair dries, you will notice that the hair looks much healthier.

Fermented rice water for hair loss:

Fermented rice water is great from hair growth and increases the thickness of hair. It is very easy to make also. Fermented rice water has been used by Japanese women to increase the thickness and length of hair. It contains vitamins that are very good for reducing hair loss.

You can make fermented rice water in the following way:

Take a fistful of rice and add it to 1 glass of water. Let it ferment overnight or for about 12-24 hours. Clean your hair with a mild shampoo. Then rinse your hair with this rice water. Wash it off  with water.

Do this two times in a week and you will notice that your hair becomes healthier.

Fenugreek seeds  and herb:

Fenugreek is rich in nicotinic acid and proteins. They help to stimulate hair growth and thus help in hair loss. The fenugreek seeds and herbs can both be used for reducing hair loss .

Fenugreek seeds:

Take 1-2 spoons of fenugreek seeds and soak them overnight in water. Then in the morning grind the seeds along with water and make a paste. Use this paste in the form of a hair mask. Do this every time before hair wash.

Fenugreek herb:

Take some fenugreek herb and grind it with water. Make a paste and add to coconut oil or milk. Use this mixture in the form of a hair mask and keep it on for 30 mins before hair wash.

Hot Oil treatment :

In India it is a very common practice to apply oil before hair wash. The oil provides hair with nutrients and prevents drying out of hair after shampoo. Certain oil like the castor oil have proven to increase hair density and nourish your scalp. When applied warm the oil reaches the roots and nourishes them effectively .

Procedure:

A night before hair wash, just comb your hair. Then warm 1tsp. of castor oil and coconut oil together . Apply this mixture of warm oil on your hair and comb your hair thoroughly. Then in the morning wash off the oil with a mild shampoo.

Note:
Do not heat oil too much . The scalp is very sensitive, so don't apply hot oil . Let it cool down a little before applying if you feel it is too hot.
Massage the oil into your hair with your hands.
Do not apply excessive oil , as it may not get removed thoroughly after hair wash. Hair will become sticky and flat.

Eggs and olive oil:

Egg protein has now become very popular trend. There are various shampoo brands that advertise this  in their product. However, applying real eggs is more efficient. Olive oil acts against the hair frizz and conditions it. Egg proteins nourishes your hair from within.

Procedure:

Wisk 2 eggs and 3 tsp. of olive together until they are properly combined. Apply this to your hair and leave it on for 1 hr. or so for nourishment. Then wash away with shampoo.

Milk and honey :

Milk and honey are excellent together . The milk as discussed before is full of proteins and fats. Moreover, honey  acts as an emollient, which means that it controls frizz.

Procedure:

Mix half cup of milk with 2 tbsp. of honey . Then massage the hair with this mixture along the length and tips as well as the roots. Keep it on for 2 hours and wash with a mild shampoo.

Rice floor and egg mask for hair loss :

Rice floor is relatively unpopular in western culture for hair treatment. However, rice floor cleans away the hair and scalp . It is also known for improving hair growth. Eggs as discussed above are very rich in proteins and help nourish hair effectively.

Procedure:

Mix eggs and rice flour together and add milk if the mixture is too thin. Apply this mix onto your hair 1 hour before hair wash.

Aloe Vera for hair loss:

Aloe Vera is enriched with vitamins . It has anti-dandruff property and it acts like an emollient. It moisturizes hair and keeps it clean free from frizz. Aloe gel is home remedy for dandruff and hair loss.

Procedure:

Take one aloe Vera leaf and get the gel out by peeling it. Or you can also use 2-3tbsp.  packed aloe Vera gel.

Apply aloe Vera throughout your hair and keep it for 20-30 minutes. Wash away the gel by using a sulphate free shampoo.

Onion juice:

Onion is very effective for promoting new hair growth. This is because it contains sulphur , which helps in collagen formation. It is said that onion juice can be effective to reverse baldness. However, there is no evidence of that.

You can juice out one onion or grate it. Use it directly on the scalp and massage . Wash off with mild shampoo after 15 mins. Don't worry about the strong smell of the onions as it goes away after one wash.

Yoga for hair loss:

Yoga focuses on increasing the blood circulation in the head towards your scalp. Some yoga poses effective for reducing hair loss are:

Inversion pose:

You can do this pose in the following way:

First stand on the floor with feet slightly apart. Then bend forward and let your palms rest on the floor . Your back should be straight and knees should be straight. Be in this position for 2 mins  and then gradually come back to the original position.

Do this pose 3-4 times for better relief from tingling in the arms and legs.

Bridge pose:

Bridge pose is very effective in relaxing the abdominal muscles and increases your metabolism.

You can do these pose in the following way:

Lie down on your back and lift your waist up. You should lift your waist and chest up in such a way that the pressure is applied on the thyroid area in the neck. Place your hands beneath your back and hold your hands if possible. Be in this position for about 5 min and then relax. Repeat this pose 2-3 times.

Seated forward bend pose:

It stretches your spine and helps release the gases. It brings pressure on the abdominal area. Hence, relieves stomach ache.

You can do this pose in the following way:

Sit on the floor with your back straight and legs straight ahead of you. Then bend forward so that your nose touches the knees. Stay in the seated forward pose for 5 mins.

Sarvangasana:

Shoulder stand pose affects the endocrine system. The thyroid gland receives the maximum supply of blood . This pose is very good for improving thyroid gland function. This pose squeezes out the stagnant secretion. It also increases the blood circulation to your hair follicles. Hence helps in reducing hair loss.

Rubbing your nails:

This is very effective in increasing the volume and length of the hair. It is a very simple practice and can be done anytime and anywhere.

Just rub the nails of your left hand on the nails on the right hand bending your fingers. You will notice vibrations as you rub.

Although it is a very simple practice, it works wonders for improving the health of your hair and prevents hair loss.
