 Piles is also known as hemorrhoids. In this condition the anal tissues become inflamed and cause immense pain while defecating and even sitting.

It might seem uncommon, but about 50% of the population suffers from piles or hemorrhoids.

What is piles or hemorrhoids? *img

In  piles the tissues of the anus become inflamed and in severe cases bleeding occurs from the anus. The inflammation can be internal or external.

In internal inflammation, the tissues located 3-4 cm inside the anus become inflamed and cause painful conditions. However, in external piles, the inflammation occurs at the external area of the anus.

  • Uncontrollable bowel movements.
  • Strangulated hemorrhoid is also possible. This occurs when the blood supply is cut off to the anal region. This creates infections and blood clot.

It has 4 grades:

Grade I:

  • Small inflammation
  • Minor
  • not very visible

Grade II:

  • Inflammation inside the anus
  • This might get pushes out when passing stool. However, they can return back.
  • Severe than grade I

Grade III:

  • Prolapsed hemorrhoids
  • Appear outside the anus.
  • Can be felt hanging from he rectum and can be pushed back

Grade IV:

  • Cannot be pushed back and need treatment.
  • Larger than grade III
  • When the lumps form outside the anus, they become very itchy and painful. They can also develop blood clot due to back flow of blood. These type of external piles require immediate treatment.

Causes of piles:

  • When the pressure increases on the lower rectum,
  • The blood vessels in the rectum become stretched  because of which they may also swell causing bulge.
  • This can occur due to the following causes:
  • Chronic constipation or difficulty in passing stool
  • Chronic diarrhea or bowel infection
  • Pregnancy (most women do experience it first after delivery)
  • Piles is inherited by parents to offspring.
  • Heavy lifting because of strain on the anus.

There are a range of different types of ointments and creams available in the pharmacy for piles. However, here are some natural remedies that will help you to get relief from piles and its symptoms. Especially when it becomes very painful.

Aloe Vera: *img

Aloe Vera is very slippery and has soothing properties. It is used in various skin problems to get rid of itch and irritation.

The best thing about Aloe Vera is that you can use it topically and internally. When taken internally, it acts as a laxative and makes the passage of stools easier.

The topic action is anti-inflammatory and soothing the itch and pain associated with piles. Aloe also helps to soothe the irritation in the anal area.

It has laxative effect too and relieves constipation.

You can sue coconut oil in the following way:

  • Use coconut oil in your food. It is tasty and nutritious.
  • You can apply in directly to the anal area.
  • In cases of internal pain and piles, use coconut oil suppository. Make suppository in a mold by freezing them.
  • Use coconut oil in the bath. It also benefits the skin.

Here are some yoga pose that will relieve piles and its symptoms:

It is deeply relaxing yoga pose called 'shishuasana'

How to do this pose?

Sit on your knees in such a way that heels touch the buttocks. Then bend down and keep your hands over your head. Keep your palms facing down.

It calms the nervous system and relieves stress.

Seated forward bend pose: *img

It stretches your spine and helps release the gases. It brings pressure on the abdominal area. Hence, relieves stomach ache.

You can do this pose in the following way:

Sit on the floor with your back straight and legs straight ahead of you. Then bend forward so that your nose touches the knees. Stay in the seated forward pose for 5 mins.

Half spinal twist pose: *img

This pose helps in detoxification of the body. It also improves the circulation to the digestive tract, hence aiding its function.


Sit on the floor with legs straight in front of you. Then gradually bend the left knee and bring the right leg closer to the pelvic region just as cross legged position. Bend your right knee and keep your right feet over the left knee. Now, bring your left arm across your right knee in such a way that there is a twist in the spine.

Stay in this position for some time and then come back to the original position.

Legs against the wall pose: *img

In this pose you have to lie down on your back and place your legs parallel to the wall. Lean the legs over the wall and stay in this position for some time.

It improves the blood circulation and massages the rectal and anal area. hence it is very helpful in piles.

Sarvangasana: *img

It improves the blood supply to the thyroid are and relieves pain associated with piles.

Steps todo this pose:

Lie down on the floor, then gradually lift your lower abdomen and chest. Give support to your lower abdomen  with the help of your palms. Let the body be straight up and don't bend the knees.
