Paralysis occurs when a part of brain or spinal chord is damaged. This results in loss of signal transmission from the brain and spinal chord to the nerves. Eventually, the muscles get out of control and it leads to paralysis.

So what is paralysis?

Paralysis is a disorder which results in loss of control over muscles. Muscles' action is controlled by the nerve tissue arising from the brain and the spinal cord. If there is any kind of damage to the brain, spinal chord or the nerves controlling the muscles, it leads to paralysis. In simple words it means that you lose control over your muscles.

This is because the nerve cannot send any signals to the muscles.

Types of paralysis:

There are various types of paralysis. Paralysis is not so rare condition and you may notice it in people who have some underlying issue in the body or due to trauma to the nerves, brain or spinal cord.

These are the types of paralysis:

Partial paralysis:

As the name suggests it means that you have some control over the muscles. The muscles are not completely out of control. It is also called as paresis.

Complete paralysis:

In this type  you lose complete control over your muscles. Which means that you might not be able to the muscle completely.

Permanent paralysis:

In permanent paralysis, you can never regain  muscle control in a particular muscle. Which means that you suffer from paralysis of that muscle throughout your life.

Temporary paralysis:

In this type some muscle or all muscle control resumes.

Flaccid paralysis:

As the name says, the paralyzed muscles shrink and become flabby. This results in flaccid paralysis.

Spastic paralysis:

The muscles become tight and hard and they jerk or spasm oddly. This results in unwanted muscle  movements.

It is broadly classified into two types, localized paralysis and generalized paralysis. In localized paralysis, only a specific muscle is affected in the entire body. However, in generalized paralysis an entire wide area of the body is affected. Hence, generalized paralysis is more severe than localized paralysis.

Types of generalized paralysis:

Monoplegia:

It affects the limbs. However, in this type only one limb is affected like either one arm or one leg.

Hemiplegia:

Hemi means half. Hence, this type affects all one half of the body affecting the limb present on that paralyzed part of the body.

Diplegia:

It affects the area of the body on both the sides. For example, either both sides of the face or both the arms.

Paraplegia:

Affects both the legs and in some cases the some parts of the trunk too.

Quadriplegia:

This is the most severe form. This is because it affects the entire body from down the neck. It can also affect the function of the essential organs such as the heart and the brain.

Causes:

Paralysis can occur dur to various causative agents. The most common among them is due to blockage in the blood vessels or damage to the brain or spinal cord. This results in loss of nerve function. The nerve damage can be caused to sports injury or accidents.

However, there are some genetic disorders that contribute to paralysis:

Demyelinating diseases:

Myelin sheath is a protective layering over the nerves. In this type the myelin sheath is damaged with time. As a result, the nerves cannot send signals to the muscles properly causing loss of muscle control. The most common disease is multiple sclerosis.

Motor neuron disease:

You might be familiar with the name Stephen hawking. He suffered from this condition which lead to loss of muscle control in the body. Motor neurons control the activities such as walking, breathing, speaking, moving the limbs etc.

Periodic paralysis:

It occurs when there are changes in some genes. It is triggered by something the person eats.

Sleep paralysis:

As the name suggests, it happens while sleeping or waking up. Sometimes some people see imaginary things that rea not there in this paralysis.

Bell's palsy:

One half of the face droops. This could happen due to some kind of virus.

Todd's paralysis:

It occurs for a very small amount of time after epilepsy or seizure.

Tick's paralysis:

There are some ticks that have neurotoxins. This means that the nerves are damaged due to that toxin. However if you remove the ticks and treat it, you can get rid of the paralysis. It starts from the feet and legs moving upwards.

This gets severe if left untreated.

Muscular dystrophy:

The muscles are made up of proteins. Certain changes in the proteins leads to changes in the muscles. The muscles become weak and the muscles break as time passes. This leads to paralysis.
