Blood pressure is given in terms of two readings the systolic pressure or the pressure that the blood has on the arteries and diastolic pressure when the heart rests. So, if you have low blood pressure, your blood pressure is below 90/60 mm Hg.

The normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg, but in low b.p cases it is below 90/60mmhg. However, if you have no symptoms despite of this condition, then it is not much 0f a concern. But this condition can decrease the amount of blood going to the brain, liver and other vital organs, which will result in decrease in their function.

If you notice that you have low blood pressure but you are fine then it is not a serious issue. However, low b.p is serious if your vital organs are starved. For example, if your brain does not get adequate blood supply, you will feel light-headed, loss of concentration and you may faint too. If the pressure drops suddenly then it is not good for the body. This can happen if you stand up very fast from a lying position. This is known as the postural hypotension.

This means that the heart or nervous system cannot respond correctly to sudden changes. The risk for low blood pressure is more as you age. This might be because the blood flow to heart muscle and brain decreases.

It is estimated that about 20% people over the age of 65 experience postural hypotension.

Causes of low blood pressure:

The blood pressure decreases below normal due these causes:

  • Pregnancy
  • Underactive thyroid or other hormonal problems like diabetes or low blood sugar levels.
  • Some of the OTC medications.
  • Overdose of medicines given for hypertension.
  • Heart fail
  • Improper beating of heart due to arrhythmias.
  • Dilation of blood vessels
  • Heat stroke
  • Liver disorder.

These are some conditions that can cause low blood pressure. However, if you are experiencing sudden drop in  pressure, then these causes might not hold.

Causes of sudden drop in blood pressure:

  • Excessive bleeding due to injury in an accident
  • Fever
  • Hypothermia
  • Hear muscle fail or heart fail
  • A very severe blood infection known as sepsis
  • Dehydration due to vomiting
  • An adverse drug reaction to any medication or alcohol consumption.
  • Allergy or anaphylaxis which interferes with the beating of the heart.

Who can have postural hypotension?

Postural hypotension is when there is sudden decrease in blood pressure when you stand up suddenly. The reasons can be various like dehydration, starving condition, weakness or being very tired. The chances of having postural hypotension increase with the following conditions like genetics, age, diet, physiological factors and infections too.

This is very common in people taking medications to lower blood pressure. You can notice that this condition goes away if you eat fully and do not starve.

However, there are certain drugs that act as causative agents for hypotension. There are two major categories:

  1. Drugs that treat hypertension such as beta blockers, diuretics, ACE inhibitors and other drugs.
  2. Drugs that are used for hypertension as  a side effect are nitrates, erectile dysfunction, Parkinson's disease, neuroleptics, anti-anxiety medications and drugs on Central nervous system.

The natural causes of hypotension are dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, excess blood loss, menstruation and some other conditions.

Coffee for low blood pressure:

Coffee contains caffeine, which is very good for treatment of low blood pressure. If you are suffering from postural hypotension which means that if you stand suddenly, b.p drops then coffee is  very effective in treatment of this.

When you take coffee or any caffeine containing food, you will notice that it increases for a short period of time. However, you should understand that this is for temporary relief only.

You can take coffee in the following way:

Add 1-2 tsp. of coffee to one cup if boiling water. Then let it simmer for at least 5 mins. Drink when it is cooler for getting relief from hypotension.


Vitamin B12 is very essential for anemic people, so you should consume such foods. Anemia increases the risk of hypotension. Hence, you should consume B12 vitamin containing foods for relief.

The foods rich in vitamin B12 are sweet potatoes, spinach, almonds, milk, eggs, cheese and fish. You can also take vitamin B12 supplements. You can also have salted cheese and crackers for satisfying body needs for this vitamin.

However, you should consult your doctor before consuming such supplements.

Green tea:

Green tea is very rich in anti-oxidants and caffeine. The caffeine's action on the body in increasing low blood pressure is quite unknown. Except for the fact that it inhibits the hormone responsible for dilation of arteries.

Steps to use:

Take 1 tsp of green tea and add it to 1 cup of boiling water. Steep the green tea bag into water for at least 10 mins before drinking. It is also great for other ailments apart from low blood pressure. Have green tea at least 2-3 times everyday.

Rosemary oil:

Rosemary oil is one of the natural remedies responsible for increasing low blood pressure. This rosemary oil contains camphor. This camphor is known for having action on respiratory and circulatory system.

You can use this in the following way:

You can add about 1-2 drops of rosemary oil and add it to some coconut oil. Then massage your body with this oil and let it seep in. If you do not have coconut oil then you can use any other carrier oil for this use.  Take a nice hot bath after.


We know that salt increase the  pressure. Hence salt is not advised for people suffering from hypertension. However, it is great for increasing  if you have hypotension. But, you should not take salt often.

How to use:

Take one glass of water and add 1 or 1/2 teaspoon of salt to it and mix. Drink this saline mixture whenever you feel dizzy or lightheaded due to hypotension.

Almond milk:

Almonds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which makes it great addition to healthy diet. They are very rich in vitamins also. Here is how to use almond milk.

Take 5-6 almonds and soak them overnight in water. Then peel the skin of almonds in the morning, and crush them in the mixer. Add some water to almond paste and boil to form milk. Drink this almond milk everyday to keep your pressure in control.

If you think making milk is tiresome then you can add almonds to cereals and smoothies.


Basil or Tulsi is an ancient herb used in India for ages as therapeutic and anti-inflammatory, adaptogen and cardioprotective property. Moreover, Tulsi is rich in essential nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, and vitamin C.

You can have basil by crushing 10-15 leaves with 1 tsp. pf honey and have this daily in the morning.


Licorice has been used from ancient times to raise  hypotension. It also has adaptogen and anti inflammatory properties and also increases  pressure.

You can have licorice in the following way:

Take 1 tsp. of licorice and make tea. You can do this by adding licorice in water and boil it. Then strain this mixture and add honey for taste.

You can drink this tea for 2-3 times per day.

Lie down on the floor, then gradually lift your lower abdomen and chest up. Give support to your lower abdomen  with the help of your palms. Let the body be straight up and don't bend the knees.

Standing forward bend pose:

This pose calms down your nerves. This yoga pose calms you down .It stretches the muscles of the arms and hamstrings.


Stand upright. Then take a deep breath and bend down. Bend down in such a way that your palms are flat on the ground . Keep this position for as long as you can and slowly exhale as you come back to standing upright.

Downward facing dog pose:

It relaxes and calms down your body.


It is a very easy pose.

Come down on all fours with your feet flat on the floor ,palms flat and hips upward in a triangular position. Hold this position for a few minutes and then relax back to the normal position.

Sit on your knees in such a way that heels touch the buttocks. Then bend down and keep your hands over your head. Keep your palms facing down.
