We apply different types of creams and concealers to hide them as best as we can. But what if we can make them go away. If we avoid the causative agents of the dark circles, we can easily get rid of them.

This article talks about the causes and home remedies to reduce dark circles.

Causes of dark circles:

The skin under your eyes is very delicate. Hence, it is prone to hyperpigmentation and damage.

If the areas under your eyes have constricted blood vessels, then the area becomes dark due to hyperpigmentation.

The major cause of dark circles under the eyes include the following:

  • Sleep deprivation
  • Allergies for example hay fever
  • Increase in the melanin around the eyes resulting in hyperpigmentation
  • anemia or iron deficiency
  • Sunlight
  • Rubbing of eyes often
  • aging
  • smoking
  • dehydration

Here are some more factors which contribute to dark circles in people. They are more susceptible to developing them.

Darker skin tones:

If you have darker skin and you have any of the above causes, then you are most likely to get dark under your eyes. This is because hyperpigmentation is more in darker skin tones.

Genetic causes:

Yes! they are genetically transferred to you by your parents. Research has found out that in you have dark circles, then they might have got passed down to you from your parents.

Lemon to lighten dark circles :*img

If you have dark circles but none of the above ingredients at home , then this remedy is for you. Lemon is easily found in every household. Lemon is found to have skin bleaching properties. You can use lemon to get rid of them in the following way:

Take one lemon and cut it half. Take one half of the lemon and rub it under your eyes . Repeat the same with other half of the lemon.

Lemon naturally bleaches your skin and gives visibly lighter skin.

Potato is very cheap and easily available . It has skin bleaching property and helps reduce patchiness and pigmentation.

Steps to use potato to lighten dark circles:

You can use potato by grating them and rub it on skin. Keep it on the under eye skin for 5 mins and then wash it off. You can use this mask everyday.

Rose water to lighten dark circles:*img

Rose  water is an excellent toner for undereye skin . Moreover, you can also use rosewater for brightening your dark circles .

You can use it in the following way:

Take some baking soda and add 1 tbsp. of rose water. Make a paste like consistency and then apply it on the under eye skin. Leave it on the skin for 5 minutes and wash off with cool water.

Rose water and baking soda balances the pH of the skin and exfoliates the skin.

Cucumber for dark circles:

Cucumber is a very effective cooling agent for the eyes. It is filled with water and relieves the soreness and inflammation of the eye.

You can use cucumber as a slice and keep it on your eyes for maximum effect.

Cucumber is also very essential for reducing strain off your eyes and decreases dark areas under your eyes too.

Cold compress for dark circles:

Cold compress is very effective to get rid of them. It is very easy method and reduces puffiness and dark areas under your eyes. You can do it by using a cold compress mask. Just make sure you keep the ice mask clean and neat.

Do this in the morning as soon as you wake up and before bedtime. You will notice that the dark circles gradually  fade.

Milk and honey for dark circles:

You can use this method everyday to get rid of soreness of the eyes. This can be used in the following way:

Mix 2 tbsps. of milk and 1 tbsp. of honey in a bowl. Take two cotton pads and dip them in this solution. Then  place them on your eyes . Keep them on until you want. You will notice cooling and relief from fatigue of the eyes. This will reduce the soreness of the eyes.

You can also use milk and honey as an eye drop.


Tomatoes have skin lightening effect. They are great for lightening of your skin. Tomatoes contain lycopene which gives your softer and supple skin. They are very refreshing for your skin and contain loads of vitamin C.

You can use tomatoes in the following way:

Take 1/2 tomatoes and make juice out of it. Then take some cotton and cut in the same shape as your undereye. You can skip this step too.

Then dip the cotton swab in the tomato juice and place it under your eyes. Keep the tomato juice on for 10 minutes. Then remove and wash the remains with clean water.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E works wonders for dark circles. It nourishes the skin and makes it soft and nourished. Vitamin E also reduces pigmentation under the eyes. You can use it as follows:

Take 1 capsule of vitamin E and pierce it so that liquid oozes out. Then apply it under your eyes and keep for overnight. Repeat this for a month and you will notice that the pigmentation goes away.

Cold tea bags:

Tea is having antioxidant properties and is great for inflammation. Hence, you can use tea in the form of tea bag for dark circles. You can use it in the following way:

Take 1 tea bag and dip it in water. Take out and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Once done keep it on your under eyes skin for some time. Then wash away the area with lukewarm or normal temperature water.

Repeat this every day for good effects and it is also great for puffy eyes.


Use a mild moisturizer and massage the area under the eyes. The moisturizer should have a lot of fragrance. It keeps the skin hydrated and reduces darkening of the skin. Dry skin under the eyes is more susceptible to pigmentation.

To prevent dark circles, use it twice daily.

Orange juice:

Orange juice is high in vitamins A and C. These both vitamins are important to reduce pigmentation under the eyes. You can use orange juice by dabbing it with cotton on the area. You can also add 1tsp. of glycerin to 2 drops of orange juice. Dip in the cotton pad and keep it under the eyes. Keep it on for some time and then wipe the excess off and wash with water.
