Asthma is a condition where a person experiences difficulty in breathing and allergic asthma is also there. This is because of constriction in the air passage of lungs or mucus secretion. Asthma is identified by breathing difficulty, wheezing and coughing.

Garlic is a great flavoring agent and is easily available in every household. It has several health benefits and one of them is anti-inflammatory property. As we know that it is an inflammatory disorder. Hence, we can use garlic to reduce inflammation associated with it. However, there are no conclusive evidences to prove the exact action action of garlic in asthma.

Ginger is an ancient remedy for any lungs related disorders. IT is also great for  cough. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is great for it. This is because it is associated with inflammation. Taking ginger daily fro your food may reduce the symptoms of Asthma.

You can use ginger in the following way for this:

Take one tablespoon of ginger and add it to one cup of water. Boil it for 5-10 minutes and then drink while hot.

You can use ginger by adding it to cookies and bread too. It has great flavor and goes well with black tea and honey.

Turmeric produces a lot of mucus and expels out the viral and bacterial particles. Moreover, it also relieves cough symptoms. It is antiviral and antibacterial in action. It soothes  the throat from inflammation.

A study showed that a cough syrup containing thyme relieved cough when compared to placebo syrup. You can make thyme tea by adding 2 tsp of dried thyme to a cup of warm water. Wait for 10 mins, strain and drink.

Steam relieves wet cough. Wet cough produces a lot of phlegm and mucus. Take a warm bath and let the steam fill the room. stay in the steam until symptoms go away .

You can also have steam with a vaporizer. Fill the vaporizer with water and some herbs such as basil, eucalyptus and rosemary. It is best remedy for cough . It also clears decongestion. Lean over the bowl and breathe in the vapor for 5 minutes . After this drink a glass of room temperature water to prevent dehydration. However , this is useful for wet cough only.

Honey Tea:

Honey provides soothing effect to the throat. Researches studied honey along with dextromethorphan for relieving cough. It was found that it relieved cough and provided relief. In children also honey showed good results . Parents prefer honey first as compared to other medications.

Changes in diet:

Although there is no association between asthma and diet. However, you should certain changes in diet treat the symptoms of asthma. For example, being overweight can increase the changes of asthma. If you increase the consumption of antioxidants from vegetables and fruits will improve your condition.

Mindfulness and meditation is one more way of relieving symptoms of asthma. It psychologically helps to relieve stress and helps to concentrate in the present moment.

Seat down with straight or lie on your back with your neck in a relax position. Take a deep breath .

Then focus on your extremities, your toes and fingers and relax their muscles. Then gradually relax your arms , elbows, knees , calf , legs and finally relax your shoulders and neck muscles to gain utmost relaxation.

At this stage just observe the thoughts  in your mind and let them come and go. Do not try to stop or control your thoughts in any way so that the thoughts float. and let these thoughts just flow through your mind.

Inhale and exhale deeply as you relax further. Focus on your breath.

Be in this position for as long you feel calm and relax. It could take about 20 mins to as long as you want.


Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of treatment. It focuses on pressing certain trigger points in the body responsible for functioning of organs. There are no long term benefits of acupuncture proven yet. However, it has shown some improvements in the symptoms like chest tightness and ease of breathing in certain people.

It has also shown effect in opening the airways and chest pain.


Caffeine is a great bronchodilator and it reduces the tiredness of respiratory muscles. Hence, having coffee or tea for asthma patients may improve the signs and symptoms of asthma.

Bhastrika Pranayama:

In this type of yoga, we control the breathing to improve the health of the lungs. This pranayama involves forced breathing. You can try this in the following manner:

Seat in a lotus pose and close your eyes. Then inhale forcefully and with equal force exhale. Practice this for some time until you feel tired. This helps in strengthening the lung muscles and improves allergic asthma.

You should practice this yoga pose in the morning in fresh air.

Kapaalbhati :

In this ,you have inhale regularly but exhalations should be forceful. This is known to clear nasal passages and remove 80% of the toxins as you exhale.



As it removes all the toxins in the air, it improves oxygen capacity and lung capacity in asthma.

Anulom Vilom Pranayama:

In this breathing exercise, take air in from left nostril and block the other nostril by using a finger. Then exhale air from the right nostril. Take in air from the right and exhale through the left nostril. This is known as Anulom vilom .

Nadishodhan Pranayama:

It provides relaxing effect and brings down the body temperature. This simple breathing exercise will clear the nasal pathway and clean your respiratory system. It helps in clearing nasal passage hence improves the symptoms of asthma.
